BMW X6 M60i xDrive, does an X6 M even make sense?

SUV

Maybe I’m getting old or maybe the “horsepowerbattle” is getting out of hand! Whatever it is, this BMW X6 M60i is proof of that!

A lot, but still even more

Let us introduce you to the new -read: facelift- BMW X6 in its second most powerful form: the M60i xDrive. Yes, there is even a more potent version of this car and that is a detail you need to remember for later on in this article. This “just under 2.4-ton weighing” SUV coupe gets the massive turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 (with some mild-hybrid magic) producing a whopping 530 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque! Yes, let that sink in for a moment, that is more than for example an Aston Martin DB11 V8 and yet, this isn’t the most powerful X6. That mountain of power gets the X6 from 0 to 100 km/h in only 4.3 seconds and up to a limited top speed of 250 km/h. Now the craziest thing about this story: you have an X6 M with 95 (!) horsepower more! Why BMW, why? Just because you want an SUV Coupe to hit 100 m/h in less than 4 seconds?

Back to the BMW X6 M60i xDrive. This car has more than enough power under the bonnet. There wasn’t a moment we thought to ourselves: “You know what, this is great, but would be even better when we put an even spicier chili up our ass.” It goes like hell and it can stop or even take a corner if you want it to. We are looking at you, BMW XM. In that regard, the BMW X6 M60i is twice the car the XM is. It handles way better (don’t get us wrong, it will never be a Miata/MX-5 in the corners), it can stop at a reasonable distance even though it weighs almost 2.4 tons and it’s just as fast to 100 km/h as the XM for 70.000 euros less! So if you want a fast, good driving and an even more rare BMW SUV (Coupe), just go for the X6 M60i!

Little sidenote to our statement here: the X6 M60i is pretty thirsty. While we were testing the big SUV Coupe, we had an average consumption of 12.6 liters per 100 kilometers. That’s enough!

The Don

You can look at the BMW X6 as the Don of the SUV Coupe. It wasn’t the first but it was certainly the car that single-handedly made the segment popular with the general public in 2018. Thank you, I guess. The X6 was the trendsetter and almost all brands came with a rival or smaller/cheaper alternatives. And let those alternatives be very popular with a lot of people these days. The Mercedes-Benz GLC, the Volkswagen Taigo or even the electric Skoda Enyaq coupe are regularly seen on the road. The X6 is a niche product within BMW with a focus on a specific clientele. Maybe that’s why they dropped in the massive V8?

That massive V8 is also pretty quiet, in terms of 4.4-liter V8s go. This -probably- will be the biggest difference between this X6 M60i and the full-blood X6 M. While the X6 M(-owners) want to be like “Hey, look at me! I have a massive car with a massive engine to mask my inferiority complexes”, the X6 M60i is more for the gentleman (that when necessary will kill you), the Don!

But you can also buy an X5

Well, don’t make the mistake of thinking this is an X5 with the trunk squashed very, very hard. No, almost every body panel is unique to this X6, including the windshield, which is slightly flatter. After the facelift, every X6 is equipped with the M Sport package. The headlights look a lot slimmer but the 5-meter-long SUV Coupe didn’t get a nose job, if you don’t count the LED in the grill.

So, what is new?

The facelift hasn’t brought excessive changes, so far! If we take a look inside, it’s a different story. The biggest change is BMW’s Curved Display, love it or hate it. This screen (or derivatives) is the new normal in most BMWs and consists of 2 screens that have been melted together into one whole. Even if you hate it, you can’t argue: it works a charm. Just like all the other features of this car and the infotainment system. There is an air of ease in and around this car. The suspension, gearbox, powertrain and infotainment system, BMW has done its homework.

Pricetag

The BMW X6 M60i will set you back … drum roll … at least 113.700 euros (BE) and that is a crazy amount of money but also isn’t! Trow on 20-25k of options and you will have a really nice car. In its base, the car is 50.000 euros cheaper than an X6 M and 70.000 euros cheaper than an XM. I just can’t give you a good reason to pick one of those! So CJ top tip: go get yourself a BMW X6 M60i.
